Aire and Calder Navigation Heritage Square

Aire & Calder Navigation Heritage Guided Walk

Most of this linear walk is along the banks of the Aire & Calder Navigation, from Leeds Bridge to Thwaite Mills, looking at the heritage and history of the Navigation and the areas we pass through.  The walk is about 3½ miles long, taking up to 3 hours, and then taking a bus back to central Leeds.

8 April: 13:30 – 16:30

Starting at the Corn Exchange, the walk route is across Leeds Bridge, along Dock Street, and then along the Navigation (mostly the River Aire) to opposite Thwaite Mills. Along the way your guide will talk about the history of the Aire & Calder Navigation, and about the heritage of the areas that we pass through, including Brewery Wharf, Leeds Dock, the flood defences, the Climate Innovation District, Hunslet Mill, Knostrop weir and railway bridge, and Thwaite Mills.

The walk is about 3½ miles long, taking up to 3 hours. At the end we walk back to the main road (Thwaite Gate) to catch one of the frequent buses back to central Leeds.

The Navigation was probably the most commercially successful of any waterway in England, and with the Leeds & Liverpool Canal formed a vital link from the east coast to the west coast.
