Join us to celebrate the life and works of Alice Scatcherd with the unveiling of her blue plaque, the plaque will be located at Scatherd’s past residence and unveiled by Dr Clive McManus with special guests the Lord Mayor of Leeds and Cllr Bob Gettings.

Alice Cliff Scatcherd – Blue Plaque Wording.

” This champion of women’s education, trade unionism and suffrage, who established the Morley District Nurses Association, lived here. She was a founder member of the Women’s Franchise League, established in 1889.

As a philanthropist, she donated Scatcherd Park to the people of Morley

Alice Cliff Scatcherd (1842–1906) was an early British suffragist, in 1889 she founded the Women’s Franchise League along with Harriet McIlquham, Ursula Bright, Emmeline Pankhurst, Richard Pankhurst and Elizabeth Clarke Wolstenholme Elmy.

Alice Scatcherd was born in Wortley but spent most of her adult life residing in Morley and lived some part, in Morley Hall. In 1872 she joined the Leeds Women’s Suffrage Society; she became a key speaker at demonstrations in Yorkshire and campaigned for women’s votes.
