Lady Lane from the 18th to the 21st Century

This walk looks at changes in this area of Leeds between the 18th and 21st century. We will look at different religious faiths, the cloth trade, and the manufacture of suits and tailoring in the former workhouse on Lady Lane. 

The walk covers:

  • A number of road widening schemes, which enabled the City to adapt from the medieval narrow streets
  • The beginnings of Catholicism in Leeds after Henry VIII
  • The Jewish migration into the Leylands from the later part of the 19th century
  • The rise of Methodism in Leeds
  • The influence of John Harrison in the 17th century
  • The New Briggate Heritage Action Zone
  • The influence of the Lupton Family and the creation of the Grand Theatre and the Grand Arcades
