The Owl Writers

In 2025, we launched a new biannual members magazine: ‘The Owl’. This 28-page magazine contains 6-8 well-developed and researched articles about Leeds, centred around a topical theme. These articles are diverse but cover the key areas of interest of Leeds Civic Trust, including transport, planning, heritage, public amenities, and culture in Leeds.

We are recruiting volunteer writers for The Owl. Leeds Civic Trust staff will set the theme and article titles for each edition. Volunteers will be assigned articles to research and write. Staff will support volunteers throughout the writing process.

Collections/Archive Group

We’re looking for new volunteers to join our Collections Archive Group.

This group works with Leeds Civic Trust’s historic collection of photographs, objects, and printed materials. They scan and catalogue these items, and preserve them for safe storage.

We’re looking for new volunteers to help us scan our photography collection to be uploaded to Leodis, Leeds’ online photography archive.

Guided Walk Backstops

Leeds Civic Trust runs guided walks every year, led by volunteer walk guides. On each walk, we have a volunteer backstop, who supports the walk leader by helping move the group safely around designated walking routes. The main purpose of backstopping is to keep the walk group together and help the event keep to time, whilst also monitoring safety when crossing roads etc.

Backstops are on hand to look after the group, so the walk leader can focus on delivering the content of the guided walk.

Guided Walk Leaders

Every year, we host a series of guided walks led by volunteers. The topics of our guided walks are wide-ranging. We’ve hosted historical walks like ‘Medieval Leeds’, walks around a particular topic like ‘Victorian Circuses of Leeds’, photography walks and more!

We’re looking for new walk leaders to join us!
