Further information on Walter Farquhar Hook:
Hook played a leading role in the creation of the present Leeds Minster, working with architect Robert Chantrell to replace the old parish church with a building large enough to meet the needs of a growing city. Opened in 1841, it was the largest church built in England since St Paul’s Cathedral and went on to influence church design across the country.
During his time in Leeds, Hook was also a strong advocate for social reform. He greatly expanded the number of church schools, founded libraries, and campaigned nationally for better housing and working conditions. His efforts to support education and improve opportunities for working families left a legacy that is still felt in Leeds today.
