Leeds Civic Trust 2024 Calendar!
It has been a perennial problem; what shall we do to mark Civic Day, which this year will fall on 17th June?
Over the years, we have opened Wharf Street to visitors to view various displays and we have had bookstalls in the Merrion Centre and Leeds Market. The question was raised again for this year, when Events Committee, in February, were charged with putting their thinking caps on.
A possible answer came at the lecture Kevin Grady gave at the Minster on Millennium Square. In that lecture he told us of a competition set up for the people of Leeds to show their ideas of what the Square should look like. Could we run an art competition for civic day?
The idea was then debated, with members and volunteers inside and outside of Events Committee, as to the form it should take. As simple as possible was the conclusion. It would be launched on 17 April, open to any age, any medium, with the theme ‘My Favourite Place or Building in Leeds’. The entry had to be clear where and what it was but it could be a photograph, pen drawing, oil painting, watercolour, graphic as long as it could be downloaded onto our website.
We had 49 entries and on 1st June a shortlisting exercise was undertaken to reduce the entries to 21 to be finally judged, on 8th June The standard was very high.
The winning 13 entries have now formed the months of our 2024 calendar and its front page. All other entries will be displayed as thumbnail sketches on the back of the calendar.
The winning entries will be on display at the Leeds2023 shop in the Trinity from Thursday 15th June to Monday 19th June.
They will also be displayed at Leeds Corn Exchange as part of this years Heritage Open Days festival 08-17 September.
The winners each received a prize of £100 that has been funded by a Leeds2023 grant and forms part of the Trust’s contribution to this festival.
