Have Your Say Today – Penny Pocket Park – Leeds Parks & Green Spaces
Leeds Civic Trust has a long-running project to re-imagine the Eastside of the city centre. This is the area encompassing the Minster, Saxton Gardens and Quarry Hill. We produced a vision for the area which we hope will influence long-term development. Our ideas include the creation of a new public park and daylighting the beck.
One part of Eastside in need of some TLC is Penny Pocket Park opposite the Minster. Penny Pocket park is a reasonably sized green space, but is often forgotten and is not particularly pleasant to experience. We have teamed up with Leeds City Council, the Diocese, landscape architects Groundwork and Wades (who own the freehold on Penny Pocket Park) to produce a plan to revitalise the park. We’re also discussing how to make better use of other nearby green spaces, including the area on the other side of the viaduct facing the Bus Station as well as the grounds of Leeds Minster itself, including Church Walk, York Street and Minster Gardens.
The proposals being discussed are very much in line with our vision. We would like to see these spaces enlarged to encompass some of the under-used roadspace. The proposals are the first tangible sign that our vision work is having an impact.
