We’re delighted to invite you to the unveiling of our 213th blue plaque, commemorating Thorntons Arcade, Leeds’ oldest surviving Victorian covered shopping arcade.
Saturday 28 November. 11:00
Opened in 1878, Thorntons Arcade is one of Leeds’ oldest surviving Victorian shopping arcades and an early example of purpose-built retail architecture in the city.
Commissioned by Charles Thornton and designed by architect George Smith, the arcade reflects the confidence and prosperity of Leeds during the late nineteenth century, a period of rapid industrial and commercial growth.
Its Gothic Revival design, decorative stonework and distinctive glass roof make it an important and recognisable architectural landmark.
The plaque will be unveiled on an easel outside the entrance to Thorntons Arcade, leading onto Upper Briggate.
The plaque will subsequently be installed at the entrance to Thorntons Arcade.
We look forward to celebrating Thorntons Arcade with you.
