Leeds Civic Trust is recruiting volunteers to write and edit articles for our bi-annual members’ magazine, The Owl.
In 2025, we launched a new bi-annual members magazine, The Owl. The Owl contains approximately 6-8 well developed articles around a topical theme. Articles pull together the latest Leeds developments in line with Leeds Civic Trust’s interests in heritage, transport, public amenities and development.
We are looking for volunteers to write articles for The Owl. At first, the themes and article topics will continue to be set by Leeds Civic Trust staff. Over time, we hope volunteers organically assume more management responsibilities for the magazine. But for now, we are simply looking for writers. Volunteers might be presented with 10 potential articles for the next edition of The Owl, and be asked to select one or two they would like to research and write. Volunteers are also asked to proofread all articles to go in The Owl for spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors.
Writing an article will require research around a topic and possibly conducting interviews with relevant people. In the past we have interviewed senior members of staff at Leeds United, Leeds City Council and the Royal Armouries, for example. For the purpose of this recruitment effort, we have made the first two editions of The Owl available online so prospective writers can get a flavour of the magazine.
We are running this volunteering opportunity a bit like a simple job application. If we receive more applications than we can accommodate, we regret that we will not be able to work with everyone who applies. We expect volunteers to commence their work for the Winter 2026 edition of The Owl.
Please see the role description here for comprehensive details about this volunteering opportunity, including the responsibilities and person specification for this role.
