Blue Plaques of Leeds Vol II – Now Available

We are delighted to announce the long-awaited second volume devoted to the Trust’s Blue Plaques scheme is now available to order. Lavishly illustrated throughout, this 162-page edition covers the 98 plaques unveiled between June 2001 and October 2017 – picking up where our previous volume Leeds Blue Plaques left off.

Blue Plaques of Leeds: The Next Collection features figures such as fearless Leeds suffragette Leonora Cohen, celebrated fantasy novelist JRR Tolkein and our city’s first black head teacher Gertrude Paul, as well as landmarks such as the Corn Exchange, Roundhay Park Mansion and Whitelocks – the famous city centre watering hole. The world of industry and commerce features heavily – from pioneering civil engineer John Smeaton to the building where Michael Marks and Tom Spencer formed their famous business alliance. From the world of sport, cricket luminaries Hutton and Sutcliffe rub shoulders with champion cyclist Beryl Burton.  We even celebrate Leeds as the birthplace of televised darts!
