Our volunteer Heritage Watch Group has met twice this year and has been busy updating our Heritage at Risk List following site visits across the city. We currently have 90 buildings or structures on the Watch List, including 17 in urgent need of attention, these are at very high risk of irreversible damage or permanent loss, and 73 considered at risk due to neglect or vulnerable through inoccupation.
Fearnville House (At Risk)
The rapidly deteriorating condition of Fearnville House remains a serious cause for concern. The previously fire‑damaged structure continues to be at increased risk, and a comparison of photographs taken in 2021 and 2026 shows a substantial loss of high‑level masonry. This Grade II listed building is quite literally crumbling, with no visible progress toward securing its future or bringing it back into meaningful use.
Parlington Deer Shelter (Urgent)
A recent site visit has highlighted the advanced state of dereliction of this Grade II listed structure. A scaffold is in place, but the tarpaulin roof covering is offering little to no protection from the elements. A comparison of photographs taken in 2021 and 2026 shows just how significantly the remaining structure has deteriorated over the past five years.
Temple Mill (At Risk)
Progress is continuing , albeit slowly, at the only Grade I listed building in Holbeck. Temple Works (also known as Temple Mill) had stood largely empty for more than two decades and suffered from the effects of long-term neglect. Recently, however, temporary repairs have been approved to make the structure safe enough for a detailed survey. Full restoration of the Gate Lodge has already been successfully completed. We hope that the rest of the site will follow suit and that the aspiration to provide a new northern home for the British Library will be realised.
42 The Calls (At Risk)
Previously advertised for sale in autumn 2024, we understand that the sale of this former hotel was completed early last year. However, there have been no visible signs of progress at this riverside site. Although the exterior is showing some general wear and tear, the building appears to be in reasonable condition from what can be seen. The for sale sign remains in place, and we hope that plans to bring this Grade II listed building back into use will emerge soon.
For those interested in learning more, an up-to-date copy of the Heritage at Risk List is available on our website.
As ever, we would be pleased to hear from members who have questions about, or concerns for, any historic building or structure in their local area, so please do get in touch.
