Did you know that the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society – the Phil and Lit – gives grants for work that increases innovation, outreach and diversity in Leeds and its immediate area? If not, read on…
The Phil and Lit’s grants programme has been running for over twenty years, giving small grants, usually between £100 and £1,000, to people and organisations for cultural and scientific projects that benefit people living in Leeds and its area. We fund a range of activities. Often our grants demonstrate local support, which helps to unlock other, larger, grants to enable projects to go ahead.

We have supported organisations to put on concerts, plays and other entertainment, often in parts of the city which are poorly served or for groups who rarely see themselves represented. We have helped people produce books about the city and its people. We have funded science fairs and citizen science projects as well as helping support Rodley Nature Reserve. We have given grants for training material for Crown Green Bowling and to support Leeds Ghana Union’s Independence cultural day. We have helped hearing impaired people enjoy Light Night and funded transport costs to enable visually impaired people to attend sessions at museums and galleries where they can learn about and handle exhibits.

This year we are particularly keen to support projects related to Leeds400, celebrating the city’s past and future across the whole spectrum of activities. So put your thinking caps on about what we can help you achieve for Leeds400!
If you have a project that you think deserves support we’d like to hear from you. More information on our grants scheme is available on our website – click here.
