Jeremy Freeman 1936 - 2025

Jeremy Freeman (1936 – 2025) – An Exemplary Trust Volunteer

Members will be sad to hear of the death of Jeremy Freeman, who, with his wife Pam, was part of a husband and wife team who gave wonderful service to the Trust for well over a decade and took a full part in the Trust’s activities. Jeremy was our membership secretary and came into the Trust offices every Thursday morning for years, quietly and efficiently maintaining our membership records, checking whether members had paid, writing polite reminder letters, and being a tremendous support to our then Treasurer, Jeremy Burton.  Pam, meanwhile, would be downstairs greeting customers in the shop and in quiet moments helping our Office Administrator with a host of jobs. Pam had the much-appreciated knack of being able to find useful things for herself to do – not least keeping me regularly supplied with cups of tea. Pam and Jeremy attended most of the Trust events and visits, and Jeremy’s habit of taking detailed notes on any event he attended made him extremely popular with our newsletter editors, who could regularly turn to him for event reports.

Jeremy was brought up in Wiltshire, studied physics and chemistry at Cambridge, and after graduation came up to Yorkshire to become a research chemist specialising in coal gas. When North Sea gas reduced the demand for coal gas, he moved into a career as a maths teacher. He had met Pam through a common interest in geology – their shared enthusiasm producing over many years a huge collection of rock samples in their garage. They had a very happy life with their three children, and as devout Christians became very active in support of Palestinian Christians. Jeremy will be long remembered and we send our deep sympathies to Pam and the family.
