Join us for a walk around our three great squares to trace the history and development of Leeds from the Georgian period through to the twenty-first century.
Friday 22 May. 14:00 – 15:30 / Tuesday 7 July. 18:00 – 19:30
We meet our walk leader, Professor Joyce Hill, in the entrance to the train station next to the Queen’s Hotel on City Square. From there we will explore our three very distinctive city-centre squares: Park Square, City Square, and Millennium Square, where the walk will end.
Visiting them in this order is a way of tracing the development of Leeds from the Georgian period through to the twenty-first century.
In each square, we will be asking why it was developed, and what it reveals about the continuing social and economic development of the city.
Each of the three squares will also introduce us to several of the most notable figures of the city’s history and some of the most distinctive characteristics of the architecture of Leeds over 250 years
There are two booking links, one for each of the two dates. Please only book tickets for the date of the walk you would like to attend. Tickets are not transferable between the two walks. Please take care to make sure you book tickets for the correct date.
£6 for Leeds Civic Trust members, £9 for non-members

Useful Information & Accessibility:
Date & time: There are two walks to choose from, one on Tuesday 7 July 18:00-19:30, one on Friday 22 May 14:00-15:30
Meeting Point: City Square entrance to Leeds train station, next to the Queen’s Hotel
Locations covered: Leeds City Centre : Park Square, City Square and Millennium Square
Approximate walk distance: 1 mile
Is the walk step free? There are no steps, although we will, of course, be on and off pavements; and, with this being Leeds, the ground is not level, though the gradients between the squares are slight.
Is this a brisk walk or a relaxed walk? We will move briskly from square to square. There will not be much walking about in the squares themselves.
Please wear: Comfortable shoes, suitable for town walking
Transport to the meeting point: There are several bus routes in the Leeds network that come close to the city station (e.g. Infirmary Street). Some buses from farther afield terminate at the city bus station, but that is not a long walk. Since we are meeting at the train station, trains are another option. There are multi-storey carparks close to the station.
Tickets: £6 for Leeds Civic Trust members, £9 for non-members
Booking link: There are two booking links, one for each of the two dates. Please only book tickets for the date of the walk you would like to attend. Tickets are not transferrable between the two walks. Please take care to make sure you book tickets for the correct date.
